CNET News.com has been named "Best News Web site" by Wired magazine.

The award, which came as a result of Wired's annual readers' choice poll, recognizes News.com for "consistently high-quality levels of technology news reporting and analysis by an online media company."

The award was presented Thursday night as part of Wired's Readers Raves 2000 Awards for the most influential people, products and Web sites. Winners were chosen based on more than 15,000 submissions in 17 categories by Wired readers.

The award is the latest of many received by News.com since its launch in 1996. Earlier this year, News.com won an award from the Society of Professional Journalists for extensive coverage of First Amendment issues related to the Internet. The site won first place for online features from the SPJ in November of last year with a special report on major corporate alliances shaping the Internet's future.

Last year, News.com won "an unprecedented third straight EPpy Award in the category of Best Non-Newspaper Online News Service," according to Editor & Publisher. The site also received a first-place feature award from the Computer Press Association for a report titled "When worlds collide."

News.com was the first news site ever to be given a Webby Award, besting the online edition of The New York Times and ABCNews.com, among others.
