Cindy's site won't be free
In an attempt to reclaim her image from the amateur Web hosts, Cindy Crawford is now strutting her way onto the Web.
The super model has launched her own Web site, Cindy.com, to satiate the apparent photo-hunger of her fans. The site features an array of pictures, interviews, and other facts about Crawford.
However, unlike the myriad of amateur sites featuring photos of Crawford--as well as countless other celebrities--this site is far from free. It is promoting membership for $39.98 after November 17. Members receive a CD-ROM with more pictures of Cindy, screen savers, wallpaper settings, and movie viewer software. Members also can enter Cindy Crawford chat rooms and talk about her nails.
Crawford joins a number of celebrities that have taken the Net into their own hands, instead of having pictures disseminated through unofficial Web sites. Other celebrities, including David Bowie, have also created their own Web sites.
Some celebrities say they create their own sites to stave off amateurs who not only post pictures of which they approve, but also post nudes--real and often fake.
But there is money to be made off the Web and celebrities also clearly have an incentive to get a piece of the monetary pie.
