Samsung Galaxy Gear knows when you're looking at it

The hotly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Gear is about to wrap itself around the world's wrists, and more details have come to light ahead of the smart watch's expected unveiling in a couple of weeks.

GigaOM reckons the Gear will definitely be announced on 4 September in both Berlin and New York. And it's set to sport a 2.5-inch screen, the whole case measuring 3 inches from corner to corner. Inside is a dual-core processor. The Gear could even have a camera in the strap. 

It'll have NFC built-in and will talk to your phone via Bluetooth 4.0, but one thing it won't do is ditch the phone completely. The Verge reports that the Gear won't be a standalone phone -- it won't have its own SIM card to work without a mobile.

An accelerometer will also tell the phone when you're lifting it to look at the screen, perhaps getting rid of the need to unlock the phone and also saving your battery when your hands are just dangling uselessly by your side. 

Of course, the real question is where you're going to wear your smart watch: the inside of your wrist, or the outside? Wear it on the outside and when someone asks you the time you pour your pint in your lap -- but wear it on the inside and when someone asks you the time you pour your pint in their lap. Much better.
