HTC Pyramid tipped for dual-core Android joy in May this year
HTC is working on its first dual-core Android smart phone, codenamed Pyramid, according to reports that tip a May release for the handset. It's expected to feature a 4.3-inch screen and HSPA+ connectivity.
The HTC Pyramid looks set to be HTC's answer to dual-core processor-toting rivals at the top end of the Android market. The new device is tipped for a May launch, packing a 4.3-inch display, and a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor.
The Pyramid has been unmasked by two separate websites in the US: Android and Me and TmoNews. Both suggest that the US arm of T-Mobile will start selling the handset by summer, although that doesn't necessarily mean the same operator will have bagged an exclusive on this side of the Atlantic.
Beyond the processor and screen, specs are thin on the ground. Although the Snapdragon processor should mean the HTC Pyramid is more than capable of shooting and viewing HD video and playing the kind of ninja 3D games that Google was showing off at its Android 3.0 Honeycomb launch earlier this week on tablets.
A May release would surely mean the HTC Pyramid comes with (at the very least) Android 2.3 Gingerbread preloaded. Although with rumours starting to emerge about a smart phone-focused follow-up to Honeycomb codenamed Ice Cream, perhaps the Pyramid will run that.
HTC is due to unveil a range of new devices at Mobile World Congress later this month, but if the US is the focus for the Pyramid's initial launch, the company may wait until the CTIA show in March to give the new smart phone its debut. If so, expect HTC to be grilled at MWC about its dual-core plans here in the UK.
That's not to say HTC's announcements this month will be bland. The company has been tipped to unveil a pair of Facebook phones at MWC, along with Android successors to its Desire and Wildfire smart phones, and perhaps even the HTC Scribe Android tablet.
