Google quashes rumours it's making an Android handset

Google's Android chief has dismissed reports that the company is working on and will release its own handset this year

Google's Android chief has put the kibosh on rumours that the search giant is creating its own handset.

A report last week claimed that Google was working with a smart-phone manufacturer to bring its own Android phone to market in the US this year, available through retailers and bypassing carriers.

As reported by our intrepid US colleague Tom Krazit, however, Andy Rubin, vice president of engineering for Android at Google, poured rather chilly water on the notion. "We're not making hardware," he said. "We're enabling other people to build hardware." It seems those holding out for the long-rumoured 'Gphone' have more waiting to do.
