Android 4.3 arrives on new Nexus 7, brings user profiles

Google has taken the wraps off Android 4.3, the latest software update for phones and tablets. 4.3 makes its first appearance on the new Google Nexus 7 tablet, also announced today.

4.3 is a relatively small update, which it's why it's still under the Jelly Bean name rather than moving on to Key Lime Pie. On first impression, the most interesting new feature is the ability to set up user profiles, so one Android phone or tablet can be used by different people with different settings for each person.

That means you can let your kids use your Android tablet safe in the knowledge that parental controls are turned on, and your emails and data are safe from accidental deletion.

Other new stuff includes a Google Play Games app to get new games from the Android app store without the distraction of apps, movies and all that nonsense. Google highlighted new Prince of Persia and Riptide games to show off the Nexus 7's gaming chops, given a boost by support for Open GL ES 3.0 graphics.

The Nexus 4, current Nexus 7, Google Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus will begin getting Android 4.3 today.

The new Nexus 7 is a 7-inch quad-core tablet with a Qualcomm processor and a high-resolution display. Unlike the original Nexus 7, it adds a 5-megapixel rear camera. It's slimmer and smaller with a smooth rear.
