Nvidia talks tablets and Tegra 3 (live blog)

CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced, among other things, a still-unnamed 7-inch Asus tablet with Nvidia's Tegra 3 chip that will sell for just $249.

LAS VEGAS--CEO Jen-Hsun Huang took the CES stage today and talked about three things: tablets, a surprise feature of Tegra 3... and cars.

Yes, cars. He explained that each car serves a different need. Just like each mobile device. "Different strokes for different folks," he said. Whatever you want, Android will make it possible.

Huang continued by showing off tablet apps enhanced by Nvidia graphics technology and highlighted Tegra 3 games found in the Nvidia Tegra Zone. He showed how a Tegra tablet can remotely connect to your PC via Spashtop, treats it like a server "and it just works."

But his bigger announcement was that the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, featuring Nvidia's Tegra 3 chip, is available today. And he teased a still unnamed 7-inch tablet with a Tegra 3 chip that will sport the low price tag of $249.

Huang also announced a new technology called Direct Touch, which gives a more responsive screen and a "buttery smooth" experience. In addition, Huang spent some time touting Windows 8, which it says will enable a new class of devices to mobile device. And he hit on the "connected car," teasing an upcoming announcement with Audi and mentioning other cars with Tegra processors.
