Vodafone opens 4G to new customers

Vodafone's fledgling 4G network is now open to new customers and existing Vodafone customers looking to upgrade to a 4G device.

When Vodafone switched on its 4G service in June, it was only available to existing Vodafone customers with a 4G-ready phone and "the right plan".

That's now changed, with Vodafone taking on new customers, and current customers looking to change to a 4G device from today.

The coverage of Vodafone's 4G is still limited to areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, as well as Wollongong, the Gold Coast and Newcastle. The telco has provided a Coverage Checker for customers and other interested parties to see whether they're in a 4G zone.

According to Vodafone's chief network officer Benoit Hanssen, the company is expanding its 4G "footprint", and by the end of 2013 plans "to triple the number of 4G network sites".

As we noted when we had our first look at Vodafone 4G, this is when the true test of the network's stability begins. If you're an existing Vodafone customer already on 4G, we'd love to hear from you about any impact you experience in the next few weeks as more customers come on board.
