It's true, you can easily create a GIF on your Galaxy S8.

Both Galaxy S8 phones offer Samsung's Edge panel feature. Think of Edge panels as an extra home screen, hidden on the side of the display, ready to spring into action with a swipe.

By default, the S8's Edge panels include app shortcuts, tasks shortcuts, and a contact panel. However, there's another panel that turns your Galaxy S8 into a GIF making machine -- Smart Select.

You'll need to take a few extra steps to set it all up, but afterward, you can create animated images with just a few taps.

Add the Smart Select panel

To add the Smart Select tool, open Settings > Display > Edge screen > Edge panels > tap the Smart Select panel to enable it.

Just press record

When you find a video that's perfect for making a GIF with, slide out the Edge panel, then swipe through your panels until you find Smart Select. Tap the red GIF button, line up the area of the display you want to capture, and, finally, press record.

You can capture up to 15 seconds in either quality setting. Once you're done, you can edit, share or save the GIF. The GIF that's playing above was recorded using the high-quality setting.

Unfortunately, you can't tap through menus or use the device when it's recording a GIF.
