Telstra is in the testing phase for a major firmware update for the HTC Velocity, which will upgrade the Android platform on the handset to the latest version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

Telstra Director of Device Management Andrew Volard confirmed last night that the telco is testing the Ice Cream Sandwich update on the new HTC Velocity, with sources at HTC saying that they are working towards a mid-February release date for the update. A similar firmware upgrade is also in the works for other HTC handsets in the Telstra range, including the HTC Sensation, and these will be delivered in early March.

Volard also spoke briefly about the Telstra 4G roadmap for the first half of 2012, saying that the telco is working towards ranging another "three or four" new 4G-capable handsets, a 4G tablet and two new mobile-broadband devices.

"[The HTC Velocity] is the first in a large portfolio of products coming this year," Volard said.

The HTC Velocity is the first 4G-capable smartphone to be released in Australia, connecting to the 4G network that Telstra commercially launched towards the end of last year. Telstra is advertising download speeds of up to 40Mbps on the handset, and upload speeds of up to half of that figure. The 4G network is available in a 5km radius from the CBD of all major Australian cities, and in 80 major regional locations.
