Short Take: Williams activates 700-mile fiber optic link

Williams Communications, the fiber optic telecommunications wholesale unit of natural gas distributor Williams, activated a 700-mile stretch of its network between Miami, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia. More than 17,600 miles of the company's 20,000 miles of fiber optic wires have now been "lit," or turned on. The company expects to have 32,000 route miles of fiber installed by the end of 2000.
