SmartPipes, an Internet and networking services firm, will launch a beta of its initial service next week. The company, formed last November with financial backing from former Netscape executive Jim Clark and venture capitalists at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, has developed a software-based system to automate the activation and management of advanced Internet protocol (IP) services for business customers who outsource their secure networking needs to the company. SmartPipes' first service will target intranets, extranets and security features, while future services will involve videoconferencing, virtual whiteboards and voice-over-IP.
