Short Take: Nortel releases IP network upgrade set

Nortel Networks announced a new initiative targeted at its traditional carrier customers who plan to upgrade their networks for IP, the Internet protocol. The so-called Succession network is comprised of four components: server-based calling software to handle IP services transmissions, a gateway to link different network elements, network management software tools, and networking hardware based on asynchronous transfer mode technology, or ATM. The company also plans to release software interfaces for the technology package so carriers can integrate their existing layouts with the new tools.
