The global networking equipment industry will reach a value of $50 billion by the end of the year, according to a new study by Cahners In-Stat Group. Cahners said first-quarter growth slowed to 3 percent, though the industry was worth $10.8 billion and is poised for a big year in 2000. North America dominated sales with 53 percent share. Digital modems, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches and voice-over-Internet Protocol gear accounted for much of the growth.
