Metromedia Fiber Network, a fiber-optic communications carrier, today announced a $1.4 billion expansion of its
nationwide backbone network. The company, which operates metropolitan networks in 51 North American cities, will link 14 new data centers for its
Web hosting subsidiary AboveNet Communications. The expansion, which is expected to be completed in 12 to 18 months, will total 29,000 route miles
of fiber optics in the United States and Europe. The new data centers will open by early 2001.
