GTE announced it has initiated online
testing of digital certificates that comply with the latest Secure
Electronic Transaction (SET) specifications through its CyberTrust Web site. The tests
are designed to ensure the
interoperability of digital certificates under the SET Certificate
Management Protocol, a messaging system through which consumers, merchants,
and financial institutions obtain verifiable information about the identity
of their counterparts in an electronic transaction. The certificates are
used like an electronic passport to verify the identity of the holder.
