Short Take: Competitive phone providers post gains

The local phone market served by competitors to incumbent phone companies or Baby Bells grew 53 percent in the first six months of 2000, the Federal Communications Commission said Monday in a report. However, that growth only brought competitors to 6.7 percent of the local phone market. More than 60 percent of those lines managed by competitors served medium and large businesses, the FCC said.
