Samsung E900: Slide over, Chocolate phone

The Samsung E900 isn't as pretty as the Chocolate phone, but looks are only skin-deep -- we think you should check it out

It's no secret that Samsung like making slider phones, but recently they've taken a hefty blow from their rival LG, who've made the extremely popular Chocolate phone. We knew that Samsung wouldn't take this lying down.

Last month we described the E900 as a potential Chocolate killer, but we weren't sure when or where it was going to be commercially available.

On 28 May, Phones4u and The Link started to sell the Samsung E900, so we went along to our local shop to check out the goods and see if the phone is a true fashion-slider contender.

Our first impression of the E900 was that it's slightly smaller and stubbier than the Chocolate phone, measuring 93 by 45 by 17mm. It doesn't have the same seamless look to it as the Chocolate phone, but it does feel good to hold. There's a heat- and touch-sensitive touchpad, similar to the one on the Chocolate phone, but the navigation button responds like a normal button, which we prefer as it's more responsive and quicker to use.

The E900's feature set beats the Chocolate phone's hands down. Not only does it have 80MB of internal memory and an expandable miniSD slot, it also has a 2-megapixel camera. Overall, the phone is much better in terms of features and even though it lacks the LG Chocolate's 'wow' factor, it definitely is one to consider if you value substance over style.
