Qualcomm, HearMe let Eudora customers talk

The companies strike a partnership that will let customers of Eudora email software talk live over the Internet.

Qualcomm and HearMe struck a partnership today that will let customers of Eudora email software talk live over the Internet.

Under the new partnership, any Eudora customer can initiate live voice sessions over the Internet with other parties after emailing them an invitation, using HearMe's VoiceContact software.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

HearMe already provides voice-over-IP (Internet protocol) service with a number of other partners, most recently joining with Ask Jeeves. In April it completed a $125-million merger with AudioTalk Networks.

While Qualcomm is best known for its CDMA wireless handsets, the San Diego wireless technology company has continued to support its Eudora email software. In June it debuted its latest version, compatible with Palm OS.

HearMe senior vice president Frank Chu called Qualcomm's decision "a logical leap forward" and a signal that Qualcomm intends to provide its customers with integrated communications services.
