Nokia X is official, and Samsung Gear 2: MWC daily round-up

Mobile World Congress is in full swing in Barcelona, so what are the headlines? We've sorted the wheat from the chaff to bring you a daily round-up of the biggest news from the show.

Today's highlights: Nokia's much-rumoured Android phone is real, Samsung ditches Android for its second generation of smart watches, and Sony launches a trio of waterproof devices. Let's get stuck in.

Nokia has made a range of Android phones. We'd seen leak after leak for a few weeks now, and they proved to be on the money. There are no fewer than three Nokia Android blowers -- the Nokia X, X+ and XL. But the thing is, the OS doesn't look like traditional Android at all. It uses Android as its base, so it can run Android apps, but not those from Google Play. It looks like a bit of a mishmash of Windows Phone and Asha.

The X and X+ are 4-inch models, while the XL has a 5-inch screen. Check out a hands-on impression of Nokia's X Software Platform here.

Samsung launched not one but two new smart watches. Named the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, they run the Tizen operating system rather than Android. They're also slimmer than the original Galaxy Gear, because the camera isn't in the strap anymore. (The Gear 2 Neo doesn't have a camera, that's the only difference between the two.)

Sony went waterproof crazy, and launched three new devices that are fit to take a plunge. The Xperia Z2 is the follow-up to the flagship Xperia Z1, and will be hitting all major UK networks soon. The Xperia M2 is more of a mid-range model, while the Xperia Z2 Tablet is a 10.1-inch slate PC.

Mobile World Congress has only just started, so this is just the tip of the telephonical iceberg. Samsung's press conference is later today, where we'll see the much-anticipated Galaxy S5.
