Nokia 6280: Chunky mobile monkey

The Nokia 6280 features 3G and a 2-megapixel camera in a form factor that feels solid and great to hold. But beware if you have small pockets: it's a mighty beast

These days, everything related to mobile phones is getting lighter, smaller and slimmer. Soon people will have to upgrade their hands in order to use these diminutive devices. Not every company is taking the line that small is beautiful, however.

Nokia isn't ignoring the big guys and its latest addition to the 3G market is the chunky 6280 slider phone. It weighs 119g and measures 46 by 100 by 21mm. While most of us think that large devices are unfriendly, this phone feels good in the hand and you can really hold it -- instead of having to grip it like a fairground claw tenuously grasping a stuffed monkey.

Our review model came from the 3 network with a stylish black and silver casing with silver accents, which give this phone a touch of class. The screen is a large 240x320-pixel, 256K colour display that's bright and sharp and has a small VGA camera next to it to make video calls with.

The slide mechanism is smooth and the phone feels very solid with the phone slid out, unlike other slider phones that can feel top-heavy. Unfortunately, Nokia still hasn't learnt that we need more space at the top of the keypad, but otherwise it is easy to use and the buttons are well shaped.

We really like the fact that there's a 2-megapixel camera with flash and a miniSD slot, which elevates this phone to a high mid-range level device and is a strong 3G entry from the Finns. It's available now with 3 for free on a monthly contract from £20 to £100 a month. Expect a full review soon. -AL
