Motorola wins $170 million deal

Motorola won a $170 million deal to supply wireless equipment to Telkomsel, an Indonesian wireless carrier, the companies said Thursday. Motorola will supply equipment that runs on (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology and finish the first phase of deployment by December 2002. Motorola will also install GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) gear in Telkomsel's network on a trial basis. GPRS is a standard for handling wireless data that is based on GSM. Telkomsel claimed a customer base of around 3.2 million people at the end of 2001, about 48 percent of the market, according to the company.
