Lycos has first day out on Wall St.

Lycos shares shoot up in first day of trading.

Internet search engine provider Lycos had a promising first day on Wall Street today, almost doubling the initial offering price before closing at 22 1/8, up more than six points.

Lycos went public this morning at $16 per share on the Nasdaq market. The stock reached as high $29.25 during a day when almost 5.9 million Lycos shares were traded.

Lycos' major competitors Yahoo and Excite both filed registration statements for IPOs last month.
