Lucent lays off 1,000 in Massachusetts

Lucent Technologies announced Tuesday that it is laying off 1,000 employees in Massachusetts as part of its previously announced cutbacks. A Lucent spokesman said the company will lay off about 800 people at a North Andover, Mass., manufacturing plant and 200 others throughout the state. Lucent announced in January plans to slash 16,000 positions as part of its reorganization efforts. Lucent will cut 10,000 jobs, plus another 6,000 employees, by selling factories and contracting its manufacturing efforts out to other companies.
