Today, JVC announced the latest--and the most promising--model in its hard drive-based Everio camcorder line. Unlike the GZ-MG30, which had extremely poor video quality, the JVC GZ-MG70 has a higher-resolution 2-megapixel sensor. Based on what I've seen so far in MPEG-2-based recording devices, the extra resolution seems to make a real difference--possibly because it gives the encoder more to work with in order to minimize artifacts. Rather than reproduce the specs here, I'll defer to JVC's Web site.
It's slated to ship next month for $1,100. We have a unit in house; as soon as it's tested, I'll check out the video quality and report back.
