iPod nano Product Red: Santa's MP3 player

What better way to get in the festive mood than an iPod nano the colour of Saint Nick's pyjamas? And you'll also be doing a good deed and getting a kiss from Bono. Result!

It's going to be a 'Red' Christmas here at Crave, if Apple has anything to do with it. Buying an iPod nano is always a treat in itself, but buying a Product Red version of the natty little MP3 player helps in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. For every Red nano purchased, Apple gives $10 (around £5) to the Product Red charity.

The product's not bad either. The finish to the red iPod nano glistens and gleams like Christmas baubles. Crack open the packaging, load it up with tunes and your ears are also in for a treat. Some joker thought it was a good idea to put Now That's What I call Xmas 2006 into the iTunes library. At first we resisted, but the nano actually made some of those classics sound really good -- it had us all rocking around the Christmas tree.

The all-round aluminium finish is pretty scratch-resistant and the bright 38mm (1.5-inch) colour screen is a joy to use. The sound reproduction is excellent -- very detailed with plenty of warmth and depth to the audio. We also love the new-style headphones, which seem a lot comfier in the ear. The 8GB model will set you back £169 and holds up to 2,000 songs, but you can always opt for the 4GB version at £129, which holds up to 1,000 tracks. There's also enough battery life to keep you jiving for around 24 hours.

It won't play video, but who wants to watch The Great Escape on a 38mm screen, especially when it's going to be on the telly anyway? Get your Santa on, score a Product Red nano, and at least this Christmas we can all rest easy that our gadgets are colour coordinated. -CD
