The reaction on Twitter to Apple's new iPhone and iPad didn't require 140 characters. It was simply: Meh.

Apple's 4-inch iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro generated a collective yawn in the Twitterverse after they were introduced at an event Monday at the company's Cupertino, California, headquarters. Comments on the micro-blogging platform ranged from unimpressed to more unimpressed.

The ho-hum reception marks a reversal for Apple, which has historically generated enthusiastic responses from the company's legion of fans. It also comes as Apple tries to brake an expected slowdown in iPhone sales and an existing slide in iPad sales. Both of the devices introduced Monday are smaller than their predecessors, marking an about-face from the prevailing trend to supersize devices every year, in an attempt to reach a broader range of customers.

Apple on Monday also talked up other products, including new bands for the Apple Watch and updates to the Apple TV. Still, the two iProducts were clearly the stars of the show.

Twitter didn't think there was much shine to them. Many people called the event boring and found the petite devices uninspired.

Apple will likely hold another event later this year at which is expected to unveil the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Maybe those devices will provide the wow factor Apple fans are looking for.
