Infinity Blade for the iPhone looks bleeding gorgeous

A new trailer for Infinity Blade, a game available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, shows off graphics that compare with those you see on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

If you weren't already convinced, iPhone gaming is serious bidness, and a new trailer for an upcoming game called Infinity Blade shows graphics that could rival anything seen on a current-generation console.

Previously known as Project Sword, the Epic Games iOS-only title was first shown off at an Apple event in September. It's a turn-based fighting game available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, where you control a knight fighting his way through a 3D castle.

You use finger gestures and swipes to wave your big sword around and dodge your opponent's huge weapons. RPG elements in the single-player mode include the ability to build your stats, earn more powerful items and prepare to fight the end-of-game boss, the God-King.

Epic promises additional content will be fired out to you free of charge over time, hopefully meaning no Angry Birds-style Infinity Blade Halloween Edition. There's also a multiplayer mode, using Apple's Game Centre to find friends and other challengers to cross swords with online.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous, powered by Epic's mobile version of the Unreal Engine. Check out the trailer below, showing off the huge fighters and vivid environments, which should make full use of the iPhone 4's retina display and the iPad's 9.7-inch LCD screen.

If you want to see the capabilities of the Unreal Engine on your own iOS device, download a demo of the Epic Citadel, in which you can navigate a fictional castle. Using your thumbs to move around the world, it gives you a taste of what to expect. Pricing and an official release date have yet to be confirmed, but we hope it'll be playable before the year is out.
