First official look at U.S. Cellular's Samsung Acclaim

Just about every smartphone that comes out nowadays finds itself leaked in one capacity or another. However, it's not every day the handset maker is responsible.

Samsung SCH-R880 "Acclaim"

Almost one month after we first learned of U.S. Cellular's upcoming exclusive Android handset, the first official look at the phone has arrived online.

How do we know it's official? Samsung is the party responsible for the leaked image. An Engadget reader happened upon the phone "without much effort" and passed along the picture. It also looks exactly like the phone that was on display at Google I/O last month.

We previously heard that the Acclaim would be a sliding QWERTY somewhat similar to the Samsung Moment, but until today, it could not be confirmed.

As evidenced in the picture, we can see that the phone has a four-row QWERTY keyboard with a rather unique color scheme. Gaming enthusiasts will quickly recognize the four-way directional setup on the left side.

Unfortunately, we still don't know much about this phone aside from how it looks. Rumors suggest the Acclaim will run Android 2.1 when it arrives next month. Other specs being tossed around are a 3.2-inch HVGA touch-screen display and a 3-megapixel camera. While it may not end up on the high end of the spectrum, it at least shows U.S. Cellular is serious about offering Android handsets.

The Acclaim marks the second Android-based phone for the carrier following the announcement of the HTC Desire.
