After swearing eternal love to Intel and only Intel for years, Dell has thrown off the old ball and chain for the --at least in its multiprocessor servers. Dell had been flirting with AMD for a while, and its recent purchase of Alienware, which uses AMD chips in its high-end gaming machines, had to have given Intel a chill. AMD's 64-bit server chips have outperformed Intel's Xeon processors, leading many analysts to ding Dell for its continued loyalty to Intel. Now that the breakup machine is chugging along, is Intel due to be dumped on desktops, too? (End soap opera prose here.)
