Apple unveils iPhone 5c

For the first time, Apple has introduced a second iPhone to the range, with the iPhone 5c. The new option delivers a steel-reinforced plastic design and replaces the iPhone 5.

For the first time, Apple has introduced a second iPhone to the range, with the iPhone 5c. The new option delivers a steel-reinforced plastic design and replaces the iPhone 5.

Apple has launched what it describes as "an entire experience of colour" with the iPhone 5c, the new iPhone model that directly replaces the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5c features similar internal hardware to the iPhone 5, but in a new "unapologetically plastic" design with a steel-reinforced structure. It adds a slightly larger battery over the iPhone 5, as well as all of the latest upgrades provided by iOS 7, an improved 8MP camera with larger sensor pixels and the more compatible long-term evolution (LTE) 4G connectivity (we're waiting to confirm whether it is compatible with the latest CAT5 speeds).

The iPhone 5c will be available in blue, white, yellow, pink and green, and launches with a range of soft, matte, microfibre-finished cases in a range of colours that let the body colour show through for interesting colour combinations.

The iPhone 5c will be available for pre-order from this Friday, and available in stores in Australia next Friday, 20 September.

In Australia, the iPhone 5c will retail for AU$739 for 16GB and AU$869 for 32GB.

Apple has also announced a new flagship model, the iPhone 5s, which features all of its newest, most powerful hardware upgrades, including the new Touch ID fingerprint-scanning sensor.
