Android 4.0.4 allegedly bound for Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi

In an attempt to rescue its year-old Xoom tablet from obscurity, Motorola may soon push out an over-the-air OS update to Android 4.

Let's face it, Xoom owners could use some good news right now. Since the introduction of the then-groundbreaking original Xoom tablet in February 2011, the furious pace of Android competition knocked it from CNET's Best 5 tablets list before the year was out.

And before you Xoom owners get too excited, please note that the rumored Android 4.0.4 update is targeting Xoom Wi-Fi models only. Those of you who bought this tablet on-contract with Verizon will have to continue suffering the indignity of paying a monthly fee for another year, with no promised update in sight. Burns, doesn't it?

It makes you wonder if carrier contracts on Android tablets are a good idea at all, doesn't it? Seriously folks, you have to hate Apple a whole lot to subject yourself to a two-year contract with a not-quite-iPad, that neither the carrier nor manufacturer will care about after a year's time (*cough*Xyboard*cough*)?

For those of you who'd rather run Ice Cream Sandwich on a tablet that isn't overpriced, overweight, and under-spec'd, check out the Asus Transformer Prime or wait for the Acer Iconia Tab A510, due out soon.
