Today is National Donut Day -- or National Doughnut Day, depending on where you live and how you roll. So break out your map and yellow highlighter, because it's time to plan.

On this holiest of days (see what I did there?), you can score free or discounted donuts from a variety of stores. And these are just the national/regional ones; your local, independent donut shops are almost certainly offering deals as well.

My advice: Channel your inner Homer Simpson and make the rounds. Just keep in mind that all these deals have the usual while-supplies-last and participating-retailers-only disclaimers.

Coupons.com: Today, when you purchase donuts at Target or Walmart, you can use the Coupons.com mobile app to get up to $3 cash back. Just scan your receipt and you'll receive the funds in your PayPal account.

Cumberland Farms: Between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., buy any "dispensed beverage" (such as coffee or soda) and get a free donut to go with it.

Duck Donuts: Just walk in the door and presto: A free classic donut (bare, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar) is yours! No purchase necessary.

Dunkin' Donuts: Score a free classic donut (sorry, no fancies) is yours with the purchase of any beverage -- until the donuts run out, that is.

Krispy Kreme: No purchase necessary here; just walk into a participating Krispy Kreme store and walk out with a free donut of your choice.

Lamar's Donuts & Coffee: This chain is once again partnering with the Salvation Army to make National Donut Day a fundraising day as well. No purchase or coupon necessary; you can get "any donut with a hole" for free.

Shipley Do-Nuts: Wait, what? "Doughnut" is weird enough; this sounds like something Yoda would say. ("Do or do-nut. There is no try.") Anyway, from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m., this chain is offering a free glazed with any purchase. (Not to sound ungrateful, but a glazed donut is like a scoop of vanilla ice cream. What's the point? [Ducks.])

Stan's Donuts & Coffee: If you're lucky enough to live in the Chicago area, you can score a free donut with any purchase. I first visited here last year; ah-maze-ing donuts.

Voodoo Doughnuts: OK, maybe it is "doughnuts." Voodoo is offering $1 Homer donuts doughnuts. All together, now: "Mmmm. Donuts."

Walmart: Again with the glazed? OK, OK, I'll stop looking a free donut in the mouth. (There's a joke in there somewhere.) Every US Walmart location will offer customers a free full-size glazed, no purchase necessary.

Have you found any other notable donut freebies? Make sure to share the details and locations in the comments. Me, I just wish I lived closer to my beloved Sweetwater's Donut Mill in southwest Michigan. Actually, it's probably just as well, because I'd weigh 300 pounds by now.
