New 'Game of Thrones' trailer crashes Apple Watch event

Apple announces its exclusive partnership with HBO Now's standalone streaming service by showing a new trailer from the network's bloody fantasy epic. Those little dragons are growing up.

Apple's "Spring Forward" event may be focused on introducing the Apple Watch to the world, but a sword-slinging epic full of intrigue, gore and dragons is turning heads. Apple CEO Tim Cook and HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler announced a partnership between the two companies that makes the Apple TV streaming box the exclusive place for HBO Now content.

A new trailer for Season 5 of "Game of Thrones" injected some adrenaline into Apple's affair. Full of dimly lit images, the trailer focuses on the interplay between the rival families, gives us a glimpse at Tyrion Lannister's scraggly on-the-run look and a seriously determined Daenerys Targaryen and shows off a much larger dragon than we've seen before. The little flying lizards are growing up to be some seriously dangerous monsters.

Though the deal includes HBO's past and present properties, including "Deadwood," " The Wire" and current hits like "True Detective," everybody seems truly excited for more of George RR Martin's bloody fantasy epic. CNET's Dan Ackerman, covering the event on-site, offered up this quick analysis: "Game of Thrones -- to steal a phrase from the video games industry -- is what we'd call a 'killer app'."

Some Apple-watchers anticipated the appearance of a refreshed Apple TV box, which was last updated three years ago. Instead of new hardware, we got a new price of $69, down from $99. The HBO Now subscription service runs $14.99 per month. It will be up and running for subscribers in time for the April 12 premiere of "Game of Thrones."
