Zelda: Breath of the Wild is about to get even bigger

Nintendo's first expansion pack for the game will be released this summer and promises new items and modes.

Nintendo's Zelda Breath of the Wild, a game built around vast virtual spaces, is about to get even bigger.

Nintendo on Monday laid out plans for the Expansion Pass DLC 1, which will bring new maps, armor and gameplay modes. The expansion pack, the first of two, will be available this summer.

Breath of the Wild was timed to match the launch of Nintendo's latest gaming platform, the Nintendo Switch. The game rewards players when they roam, investigate and experiment with items and creatures they encounter.

A second expansion pack is expected to be released during the 2017 holiday season, according to CNET sister site GameSpot. The two expansion packs -- they're not being sold on their own -- will be available for $20 on the Switch and Wii U.
