And also why it's different from an MMO.
Rare has released the first in what looks to be a series of Sea of Thieves videos called "Inn-side Story." The inaugural episode features executive producer Joe Neate and design director Gregg Mayles talking about what the game is.
"To me, Sea of Thieves is basically every pirate show or film that you've seen, but you can actually play and be immersed in," says Neate. "You can be the pirate you want. That's the promise of the game for me.
"Living the pirate life is how I'd describe what we're trying to achieve," adds Mayles. "We want players to really immerse themselves into what it's like to be a pirate. The sailing, the fighting, the drinking, the camaraderie, we want to give players all of that."
The duo continue to discuss how gameplay is used to make players feel like they're on an adventure with their friends. They also dig into how Sea of Thieves is different from an MMO, despite always being online and a multiplayer experience. Check out the video below.
Sea of Thieves will be releases for Xbox One and PC game. The Xbox Australia Twitter account previously indicated the game will launch in February 2017, however, the tweet was later removed. A Microsoft representative also made a statement that didn't confirm or deny the reported February 2017 release window for Sea of Thieves.
"Our next goal beyond E3 is a closed beta where we'll get some of our keenest fans involved in playing the game and providing feedback to the studio. We have nothing further to share at the moment but will have more details in the future."
Sea of Thieves is an Xbox Play Anywhere game. That means if you buy it (digitally) on Xbox One, you will get the PC version for free and vice versa. Microsoft has also stated that this game is the best game that developer Rare has ever made.
