'Too early' to talk about price for PS4 Morpheus headset, Sony says

"We still have work to do to know exactly the cost of goods and so on."

It's "too early" to announce a price point for the PlayStation 4 virtual-reality headset Project Morpheus. That's according to PlayStation Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida, who explained his rationale for holding back the pricing announcement in a new interview with GamesIndustry International.

"We are talking about launching next year, so typically we don't talk about pricing one year ahead of time," he started off. "I think we announced the price of PS4 at E3 the year of the launch, so that's five months before the launch. So it's too early.

"It's not like we are waiting for Oculus to announce their price," he added. "We still have work to do to know exactly the cost of goods and so on."

Though Sony hasn't announced specifics about Morpheus pricing, the company said previously that it is aiming to offer the headset for "as low as possibly can be done."

Morpheus is set to launch in the first half of 2016, which means it will be available before July next year.

For its part, Oculus has said that you'll need to spend around $1,500 for an "all-in" Rift experience. Factored into this price is the cost of the headset itself (which comes with an Xbox One controller) and a capable PC rig. Morpheus, on the other hand, is powered by the PS4 itself.

At E3 2015 last month, Yoshida appeared on the GameSpot x Kinda Funny stream to talk about why Morpheus played such a small role in Sony's briefing.

"When we spend more than two minutes on anything other than core gamers games, [people] hate it," Yoshida explained, going on to stress that the hardware and software for Morpheus remains on schedule.
