Studio Ghibli meets Legend of Zelda in ravishing fan trailer

A fan-made trailer will have you longing to live in an alternate universe where Miyazaki turns Zelda into an animated film.

Saddle up Epona. Look out across the green fields of Hyrule. Your dreams have arrived and they've brought the trailer for an animated movie version of The Legend of Zelda done in the style of famous Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli.

Artist Matt Vince offers the trailer, spotted on A.V. Club, as a companion piece to a series of Zelda movie poster concepts he created as an homage to filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki of "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away" fame. Miyazaki is a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, but retired in 2013. Vince published the trailer on Sunday.

A sparkling piano soundtrack accompanies a look at some favorite locations from the classic Nintendo game series. There's a windmill, stone houses, a hairy-chested merchant and beautiful sun-tinged landscapes. The Master Sword appears embedded in an altar in a haze of light. Finally, Link, the hero of Zelda, makes an appearance on his horse Epona.

Fans of the games might get a little emotional watching this and long for a real animated version. At least this trailer gives us more to go on than that rumored live-action Zelda Netflix series.
