PS4's Death Stranding trailer arrives, reveals release date

You've really got to hand it to Kojima for this one.

Death Stranding mastermind Hideo Kojima has been periodically tweeting in recent days, teasing about his upcoming epic. On Wednesday, Sony revealed on the PlayStation Twitch channel a new trailer for the mind-bending game and a release date of Nov. 8.

The nearly 9-minute trailer offers a new look at several characters, including Sam Bridges (played by The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus) and Cliff (played by Mads Mikkelsen). We also see the bad guys: murderous extremists known as the Homodemons and supernatural enemies, called BTs. In Death Stranding, which is exclusive to the PlayStation 4, gamers will play as Sam and attempt to reconnect a fragmented society and save mankind from extinction.

"Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society," Kojima said in a statement released with the trailer. "As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or "Strands" with other players around the globe."

In the trailer, we see several different landscapes and get a glimpse of combat as Homodemons chase down Sam and he has to flee or fight them off. We also see Sam unsuccessfully attempt to sneak past some BTs and get pulled down into Hades, which seems to have taken the form of a WWI battlefield, by the supernatural creatures.

On Tuesday, the PlayStation Twitch channel went live playing the trailer on a loop. The sound was distorted, though, and the screen was blacked out. Handprints revealed bits of the trailer throughout the morning as thousands of people watched. Minutes before noon ET on Wednesday, the entire screen was revealed and the trailer became visible.

After it went live, Kojima tweeted that "people have built walls and have become isolated," and he talked about how he hopes playing Death Stranding will help us understand the importance of connecting with others.

Those who preorder Death Stranding will receive multiple gold versions of in-game items. For $200, players can buy the collector's edition and receive a life-size BB Pod statue and Bridges Cargo Case.
