What's happening

Dungeons & Dragons maker Wizards of the Coast has released its latest starter kit, called Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, with everything you need to run a low-level adventure for beginners.

Why it matters

D&D is still the most played tabletop roleplaying game in the world, and this new starter kit aims to bring another generation of players into the fold. It's an inexpensive way to get into a new hobby.

Wizards of the Coast unveiled on Tuesday a new starter kit for Dungeons and Dragons, called Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Starter kits are designed to help brand-new players learn how to play D&D, and they come with a small campaign, some rule books and guides, and a set of polyhedral dice.

The Dragons of Stormwreck Isle box also comes with five pregenerated character sheets to choose from, taking away some of the stress of building your own. Though this is a small campaign, designed to level up your characters from level one to level three, it does give you helpful advice on how to role-play, in case you've never done it before.

Is Dragons of Stormwreck Isle One D&D?

Wizards of the Coast announced One D&D on Aug. 18, 2022, so it's easy to think this new starter set might be connected to that. But it isn't. One D&D is scheduled to appear in 2024, so Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is still firmly in the 5th Edition ruleset.
This is good news for those familiar with 5th Edition and for new players, especially as One D&D is supposed to be completely backward compatible with 5th Edition.

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is available now for $20 (£18 in the UK) and can be purchased at Amazon or Target, or you can download the digital version at Beyond D&D or Roll20 for $15.
