Disney announces Skylanders-style gaming platform

Now that Skylanders has become so popular, copycats are inevitable — and Disney is jumping in on the action, with a platform that it is calling Infinity.
Announced this morning, Disney Infinity works in a similar fashion to Skylanders. Figurines of Disney characters can be purchased and placed on the Infinity Base, which — like the Skylanders Portal of Power — uses near-field communication (NFC) to transport the character into the game.
Initially, 40 interactive pieces will be available. This includes a line-up of 17 character figurines, which unlock that character's world, as well as 20 Power Discs — pieces that grant your characters special powers and customisations.
The initial line-up will include play sets for Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles, with the starter pack including Jack Sparrow, Sully and Mr Incredible. However, all of Disney's properties will be eligible for inclusion.
The gameplay itself looks varied, with characters able to interact in each other's environments and stories, and players can even create their own worlds and mini-games in "Toybox" mode, using items unlocked during "Play Set" mode.
Multi-player support is offered, too, with local two-player split screen or online four player across all of the game's modes.
Disney Infinity is due to launch sometime in June this year, with the starter pack coming in at US$79.99, themed play sets at US$34.99, mixed three packs of figurines at US$29.99, individual figures at US$12.99 and a pack of two random Power Discs at US$4.99. It will be available for Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and mobile platforms.
Australian pricing is yet to be announced.
