Will you buy the $999 Surface Laptop? (The 3:59, Ep. 220)

We talk about Microsoft's education event, geek out over 5G and talk about cardboard boxes. Really.

Microsoft unveiled its premium Surface Laptop on Tuesday, in its efforts to become the new cool kid at school.

At Tuesday's EDU event, Microsoft announced Windows 10 S, an operating system tailored to classrooms and teachers. The reveal included Microsoft's latest laptop, which boasts a 14-hour battery life and a sleek design. The high-end laptop will sell for $999, while partner companies like HP and Acer offer alternatives for classrooms that start at $189.

On the podcast, we talk about what kind of students the Surface Laptop is for, and if classrooms will embrace Microsoft's push into schools.

Also on the show, we look at T-Mobile's race to build the first nationwide 5G network. Except it's not as fast as 5G should be. In fact, it probably won't be much faster than what T-Mobile customers are using now. So ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And we take a look at the future of cardboard boxes. It's more interesting than it sounds. UPS wants to come up with a solution so your home isn't crammed with packaging from Amazon orders. It's created something called stealth wrap, which is like the future of bubble wrap.

The 3:59 gives you bite-size news and analysis about the top stories of the day, brought to you by the CNET News team in New York and producer Bryan VanGelder.
