There are some gadgets that just sound so daft on first glance that only getting your hands on it can possibly win you over. Which is why we were so keen to try out the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj, the first digital camera to include a built-in projector.

We headed to Nikon's UK head office to get sticky fingerprints on the only two S1000pj models in this country. The first thing we noticed was the size: despite the projector, it's no bigger than any other 12-megapixel snapper with a 5x zoom. Seeing it in action dispelled our visions of be-sandalled dads clunking through the holiday slides at a darkened fondu party, as we quickly realised the potential wow factor of whipping this thing out in the pub.

But the proof of the pudding is in the projecting, so we dimmed down the lights and fired up the 10-lumen lamp to see just how well our videos and snaps would be splashed on the wall. Hit play to see how the projector performed, and whether the Nikon S1000pj lit up our lives.
