The Last of Us, Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic thriller (complete with psychotic mushroom men), has joined the select ranks of video games that have been classified R18+ under the new options given to the Australian Classification Board (ACB).

According to the ACB website, the R18+ was given for its "high-impact violence", but it also noted that the game has a "strong impact" in terms of its themes and "moderate impact" for language.

Given the fairly brutal and visceral nature of the combat in the small section we played, we're not too surprised. But given the dark tone of the game (from what we've seen so far), we think an adult rating is a good call, thanks to the more "Cormac McCarthy" elements of the story.

The Last of Us arrives on 14 June, and is exclusive to the PlayStation 3.
