Sun upgrades lower-end server

Sun Microsystems has brought the 1.2GHz UltraSparc III chip to its four-processor V480 server, which previously came with a 1.05GHz version of the company's chip, Sun said Tuesday. The system, along with the V440 servers and other models, is part of the company's counterattack on Dell computer and others who have made gains with low-priced systems that have processors from Intel.

Configured with two processors and 4GB of memory, the V440 and V480 have starting prices of $9,995 and $19,995, respectively, Sun said.
