Sun plans new customer-specific products

Sun Microsystems will announce new collections of hardware and software that's geared for specific industries at a September conference, executives said Tuesday. Sun currently sells four collections of hardware and software--often using products or integration services from outside companies--that are tailored to "vertical" industries such as banking, where many customers often need variations of similar technology.

Sun will announce more collections at the SunNetwork conference that begins Sept. 16, said Clark Masters, executive vice president of Sun's Enterprise System Products Group. The move is part of Sun's attempt to change its image from a supplier of server building blocks to a supplier of fully built equipment.
