RoadRunner login problems and Mac OS 8.5: a follow-up

Last time, we commented on possible login problems with RoadRunner when running Mac OS 8.5.x. Numerous readers replied. Many said they had not had any login problems. A few provided some additional information:
Donald Wiggins noted: "Bill Tudor makes a free automatic login for RoadRunner. When placed in the startup folder this will automatically login the user then disappear from the desktop (without launching any other application). Much better that RoadRunner's obtrusive login application." However, (as noted by Jerry Kelly) "it is only known to work on the Albany, NY RoadRunner system."

Monty Lee suggested another web page with automatic login clients. However, the only one listed that seems to be for the Mac is the same one by Bill Tudor.

Denny Stroney wrote: "Last weekend RoadRunner sent an email that I would have to use their new Login Manager software after Jan 18, 1999, but I do not use it and I still connect automatically. I think that only Windows users have to use it."

Christopher Duckwort had problems similar to those described last time (such as a corrupted TCP/IP Preferences file) and found that a similar work-around worked for him as well. He contacted Time Warner Road Runner support service and they told him: "Unfortunately Mac OS 8.5 is not currently compatible with Road Runner. Some users have been going back to 8.1. Sorry there is no solution for this issue right now."

Michael Kuntscher only had login problems after a system crash and restart. He found that shutting off the computer for about 5-10 minutes got things working again.

David Rodriguez found that even if his login application appears to fail, he could still browse the Web and access his email afterwards.
