Apple has confirmed that it will not be releasing software updates for owners of the original models of the Apple TV which includes no support for streaming Netflix, as seen on the newly released version.
In a review of Apple's media event, Ars Technica reports that Apple will no longer provide updates to the first Apple TV models:
Additionally, there will be no software update to bring the new features to older Apple TVs. Older Apple TVs will continue to work as they have been working up to this point, and they will continue to be able to purchase movies and TV shows even though the new Apple TV is rental-only.
Apple has maintained its "hobby" tag for the Apple TV, though the latest revision could thrust the little black box out of obscurity. At $99 and armed with the ability to rent and stream iTunes and Netflix content, the new Apple TV could end up being one of the surprise tech gifts this holiday season.
It remains to be seen whether or not Apple will open up the Apple TV software platform for developers or if they will continue to add widgets on their own. Either way, Apple is making a push to be in your living room.
