ATI vs. Norton Auto-Protect Leon Thissen writes: "At startup on my G3/BW, the ATI Graphics Accelerator icon loaded with a red X on it; I found out that ATI Graphics Accelerator versions 3.7.9 and 3.8 conflicted with the "Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect" extension version 5.0.3. I reordered the ATI Graphics Accelerator extension so that it loads before the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect extension. Problem solved!" [See also related item.] Update: Another reader with a similar setup has not had this problem.
DVD hack update A posted procedure for getting Apple's CD/DVD drivers to work with non-Apple brand SCSI CD drives has been updated to correct some previous ResEdit Line number confusion and support for yet another version of Apple's driver (1.2.1). Note: This hack only works for SCSI CD drives that are currently able to boot an Apple OS CD using the 'C' key or Command-Option-Shift-Delete. If the drive cannot boot CDs the hack cannot work with that drive. (Thanks, Anthony Saxton.)
A minor annoyance in Explorer's Find function Every time I use Explorer's Find command, the Start from Top option is checked. This means that, on searches for multiple occurrences of the same term, it will always revert to the same first item found. If I uncheck the option, it works for that search, but the option is then automatically re-enabled the next time I select Find; so I have to keep unchecking it. Update: Doh! As pointed out by Christopher Jennings, using Find Again (Command-G) works around this.
Printer icon missing? Apple has posted a new TIL article (#24828) that offers advice on what to do when your printer icon does not appear in the Chooser?
XTND Translator List rebuild causes crash Brett Popovich spotted an Apple TIL article (#56804) from March 1998 that covers a problem not mentioned here previously: "Occasionally, it is necessary to delete and rebuild ClarisWorks' XTND Translator List file. ClarisWorks will automatically rebuild this file during startup if it senses that it is not present. On Power Macintosh machines, a problem can occur which will cause ClarisWorks to crash while attempting to do this." The article explains the cause (it has to do with alias files in certain System Folder locations) and the solution. Presumably, the problem still affects AppleWorks.
Nisus Compact is now free. "It has many of the features of its big brother Nisus Writer 5.1.3, but is almost as small as SimpleText."
Emailer lives! (maybe) According to a MacWEEK article, Claris Emailer may be reincarnated as an email module to Apple's forthcoming AppleWorks 6.0. [I hope so!]
G3 upgrades for PB 2400 The Vimage Corporation has begun shipping G3/240 and G3/320 upgrades for the PowerBook 2400. A press release states: "Nearly quadrupling the CPU speed of the 2400/180, the 320-MHz card will turn the 2400 into the fastest notebook computer in the entire Macintosh computing world. At the same time, this speed demon maintains extremely cool temperatures."
466MHz G3 card Newer Technology has announced the "first 466MHz processor upgrade card." It is a ZIF card and thus only works with G3 Macs.
Best Buy not the best A City Business article details Mac users' continuing complaints with Best Buy's treatment of the iMac. I had my own mini-experience last time I visited a Best Buy. There was a big banner hanging from the ceiling advertising the iMac. But there were no iMacs displayed on the floor. If you didn't look up, you wouldn't even know that the store carried iMacs.
Windows crashes after a month and a half A News.com article explains that a bug in Windows 95 and 98 may cause it to crash after 49.7 days of use. The bug was confirmed by Microsoft, which expects it to be fixed in the next update to Windows 98. A patch that fixes it is already available, as noted on a Microsoft web page.
