There are seven new Nikon compacts to choose from, including an update to the waterproof camera and an incredibly long 60x superzoom model.
As with all camera announcements done in bulk, there are some particularly interesting models packed in with the more run-of-the-mill cameras. Let's look at the most interesting camera first, which is the P600 superzoom.
Pushing the zoom limit to 60x optical means that birdwatchers and some long-distance sports photographers will be happy. The lens itself is reasonably wide at 24mm and extends to 1440mm (35mm equivalent). If this is not close enough, there is the option to keep going even further with Nikon's dynamic fine zoom setting that keeps pushing the digital zoom to 2880mm.
On the sensor side, Nikon has kitted this camera out with a 16-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, and added a rotating 3-inch 920,000-dot LCD screen to the back. There is also an electronic viewfinder and Wi-Fi included.
The companion model to the P600 is the P530 which has a 42x optical zoom lens, the same 16-megapixel sensor and a fixed 3-inch LCD screen.
Also in the lineup is the S9700 which comes with a 30x optical zoom lens, but in a much smaller overall package. Built-in Wi-Fi, GPS and the same sensor complete the list.
For the more advanced photographer looking for a smaller solution, the P340 is Nikon's upgrade to the P300 series line, which comes with manual controls, a 12-megapixel 1/1.7-inch backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and a 5x zoom lens.
Nikon's waterproof compact camera gets an upgrade to the AW120 model, offering similar rugged specifications to the previous AW models. It is waterproof to 18 metres, shockproof to 2 metres and freeze proof to -10 degrees Celcius. The 5x optical zoom lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and there is also a 16-megapixel sensor like some of the other new models announced.
Other compact models announced include the S32, a basic point-and-shoot waterproof model, and the S9600, a lower-specced version of the S9700.
All models will be available in Australia from 27 February, with pricing set at dealer discretion.
